You’ll Shoot Your Eye Out, Ralphie!

Last night I was enthralled by my very favorite Christmas movie come to life on the stage at the ATTPAC Winspear Opera House.  It was dazzling, colorful, and performed by incredibly talented children, along with the accompanying adults, of course.  And, if you have read any of my other work, you know I am a HUGE tap dancing fan; there was some excellent tap, as well.

Raphie, of course, narrates his younger adventures, and his quest to get Santa to bring him the Red Ryder BB Gun for Christmas!!  His fantasy scenes (and Ralphie has a very vivid imagination, like most children) are absolutely like dessert:  happy and satisfying!

I particularly loved the Western fantasies, but the tongue on the flagpole was hysterical.  If you’ve never seen the movie, this is a great way to experience the story for the first time.  The dogs were also exceptionally well-trained actors (but I’ll let you discover that for yourself!).

As an aside here, it brought back wonderful memories for me, as well.  The movie came out the year my son was 12 and he wanted a BB gun for Christmas!  Well, here it comes:  I used the hidden present scene from the movie to give him his wish....he was so happy!!

A Christmas Story is a journey into a child’s perception of Christmas, and very moving.  I hope everyone reading this today goes to the Winspear to enjoy this happy and joyous story.

From the songwriting team behind the smash hit Tony Award-winning musical Dear Evan Hansen and the Academy Award-winning film La La Land, A CHRISTMAS STORY - THE MUSICAL, brings the classic 1983 movie to hilarious life on stage! Set in 1940s Indiana, a young and bespectacled Ralphie Parker schemes his way toward the holiday gift of his dreams, an official Red Ryder® Carbine-Action 200-Shot Range Model Air Rifle. An infamous leg lamp, outrageous pink bunny pajamas, a maniacal department store Santa, and a triple-dog-dare to lick a freezing flagpole are just a few of the distractions that stand between Ralphie and his Christmas wish. Nominated for three 2013 Tony Awards including Best Musical, the Associated Press calls A CHRISTMAS STORY - THE MUSICAL “a joyous Christmas miracle,” while The New York Times writes “I was dazzled. You’d have to have a Grinch-sized heart not to feel a smile spreading across your face.”
