GCT’s ‘Tenderly-The Rosemary Clooney Musical’ is a HIT!!

Garland Civic Theatre’s production of “Tenderly – The Rosemary Clooney Musical” is a show for everyone. For those who remember Rosemary Clooney, her talent as a singer and her many hit songs, the story will bring back memories of a bygone era. Members of younger generations who have heard the name but do not understand the singer’s talent and influence will have a chance to get to know the woman herself and enjoy hearing her music for the first time.

The show takes place in a psychiatrist’s office as the singing star recovers from a nervous breakdown. Through a series of flashbacks, she attempts to sort out the many feelings, experiences and hardships that led to her mental collapse.

The cast of two is magnificent. Whitney Rosenbalm does an exceptional job in her role as Rosemary Clooney. She has a beautiful voice and the audience can see that she truly feels the music. Some of the memorable songs include classics such as “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “Count Your Blessings,” “Sisters” and “Mambo Italiano.”

Steven J. Golin is good in his main role the psychiatrist but he also lends his talent to portray Rosemary Clooney’s husband, Jose Ferrer, a few of her family members and some of her peers including Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby.

A talented jazz trio provides musical accompaniment.

Kyle McClaran directs this Garland Civic Theatre production. Kevin Sutton serves as music director and Abi Abel is the choreographer.

The show runs through Saturday, Nov. 5, in the small theatre at the Granville Arts Center at 300 North Fifth Street in downtown Garland. Remaining performances include Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees Oct. 23 and Oct. 30 at 2:30 p.m.
